Prof. Manoj K. AroraVice Chancellor
Prof. Manoj K. Arora holds a Ph.D in Remote Sensing from Swansea University, UK. He was a post-doctoral research fellow for about two years in a NASA sponsored project in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, Syracuse University, USA. He completed B.E. in Civil Engineering in 1984 from Punjab Engineering College (PEC) and M.E. in Civil Engineering in 1986 from IIT Roorkee.
He has more than 30 years of teaching, research and administrative experience in academic institutions in India, UK and USA.
His significant outcomes are; initiation and execution of 42 sponsored research and consultancy projects with an outlay of over Rs. 8 Crores, publication of two books and 16 book chapters, 230 research papers in International and National Journals and Conferences, 50 invited talks and keynote addresses, and Chair of several conference sessions. He has guided 20 Ph.D. thesis (and 5 currently registered) and 56 Masters dissertation. His current Google Scholar record is; citations: 4587, h-index: 33 and i10 index: 59.
He works in the areas of Remote Sensing, Surveying and Mapping, Geographic Information System (GIS) & Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and their applications. His allied research areas are Digital Image Classification, Soft Computing, Land Cover Mapping, and Hazard and Risk Studies.
He has earned Outstanding Teacher Award twice at IIT Roorkee, the Commonwealth Scholarship Award, the DST Young Scientist Award, the AICTE Young Teacher Career Award, and post-doctoral fellowship award in a NASA sponsored project, USA.
He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, and has been an active member of many professional societies including American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, Indian Society of Remote Sensing. He is the Chairman of Regional Committee for North Western Region, AICTE, has been the Co-chair of Chandigarh State Higher Education Council (SHEC), RUSA, Vice President of Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster, and member, Research Council, CSIR-CSIO, Chandigarh. He also serves on a number of committees of IITs, DRDO, UPSC, CSIR, UGC, AICTE and other organizations of excellence. He coordinated GATE 2009 at national level and sowed the seeds of GATE online in 2010, as Chairman GATE in respective years. During his stay of more than 5 years at PEC, he brought several administrative & academic reforms and strengthen academia-industry interface. Some of these are; implementation of new flexible and industry relevant UG curricula with freedom to departments and students to choose electives; introduction of concept of minor and major specializations; introduction of MOOCs courses; credit transfer scheme; formation of new inter-disciplinary research groups; creation of a research and development culture; creation of an entrepreneurship and incubation cell; modernisation of laboratories with the support of government, industry and alumni; creation of a data center and cloud computing facility and many more. His mentorship has yielded sponsored research grants from a number of research agencies and industries, and also under TEQIP II and TEQIP III of MHRD.
He has also been instrumental in creating Kalpana Chawla Chair of Geospatial Technology from Indian Railways with an endowment of Rs. 10 Crores, and opening up of Smart City Innovation Center with the support of UT Administration and Punjab Government at PEC, Chandigarh.
