Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) is a premier funding agency established by an Act of
Parliament (SERB Act 2008) to support basic research in frontier areas of Science and Engineering.
Creation of SERB is considered as an important institutional milestone in the Indian S&T ecosystem.
SERB has contributed in developing robust, comprehensive and sophisticated research facilities and
infrastructures across the country which is being efficiently utilized by the scientific community in taking
the quality of science to the next higher level. SERB has a vision “to position science and technology as
the fulcrum for social and economic change by supporting relevant, competitive and quality scientific
research and development”. Its mission states, “As the premier national research funding agency, “is to
raise the quality and footprint of Indian science and engineering to the highest global levels in an
accelerated mode, through calibrated support for research and development”.
Other main objectives of SERB include evolving a system of approach (i) to expeditiously provide
funding for individuals, academic institutions, research and development laboratories, industrial concerns
and other agencies for such research; (ii) to monitor and evaluate, by adopting modern management
practices. Also, the board serves as a leading agency for planning and promoting internationally
competitive research in emerging areas, identifying major inter-disciplinary research areas, individuals,
groups or institutions and funding them for undertaking research. Furthermore, the board scouts,
mentors, incentivizes and rewards exceptional performers, teams and institutions. SERB encourages and
