The Joy of Giving and Growing

    Irene

When I was 10 years old, a simple yet unforgettable incident altered my perspective on the world. While eating ice cream on a sunny afternoon, a little girl came up to me with timid eyes and asked for something to eat. My heart sank when I saw her, and without hesitation, I turned to my parents, asking if they could buy her some food. It wasn’t a grand gesture by any means, but the joy and gratitude on her face left an imprint on me. That small act of kindness filled me with a sense of joy I didn’t fully understand at the time.
Years later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this passion found a new path. With schools closed and education for many underprivileged children coming to a standstill, I finally had the chance to step in and do something meaningful. I began teaching a group of underprivileged students online. It wasn’t just about sharing knowledge or teaching subjects; it was about offering them hope and a sense of continuity in a world that was uncertain. Every day spent teaching them filled me with a deep sense of fulfilment and pride. I wasn’t just educating; I was building relationships, boosting their confidence, and helping shape their futures.

Just when I was contemplating how to continue volunteering, BMU became the catalyst that breathed life into my thoughts. The university provided me with the opportunity to teach a group of 15 students at Deepalaya, a school that focuses on empowering underprivileged children. The experience was both humbling and inspiring. Teaching at Deepalaya wasn’t just about academics—it was about mentoring, listening, and understanding the unique stories and challenges each student faced.
Through these experiences, I have learned that teaching goes beyond textbooks —it’s about empathy, empowerment, and creating opportunities for others. Every student I’ve taught has taught me something in return. These lessons have not only shaped me as an individual but have also fuelled my dream to continue making a difference wherever I can.
