BA (Hons) Sociology Immersive Arc

Immersive Arc of the Programme:
Learning Through Immersion
At the School of Liberal Studies, immersion is not an add-on or internship model. It is a pedagogical framework embedded within the curriculum across four years.
The programme follows a structured arc of learning:
Exposure → Exploration → Application → Contribution
Through this arc, students encounter real-world contexts early in their academic journey, analyse them through interdisciplinary frameworks and ultimately contribute through research or practice.
Students begin their immersive learning journey through Introduction to Immersion courses
Immersion begins early through:
- Community-based exposure courses
- Observation-based learning
- Reflective and creative assignments
The emphasis during this stage is on listening, observation and reflexive awareness.
Students explore interdisciplinary questions through courses such as Engaging Diversity, which examines how institutions and social structures shape lived experience.
The third year includes a dedicated immersion semester lasting 8–10 weeks. Students engage with institutions, community organisations or field sites connected to their interdisciplinary minor.
During this period:
- Faculty act as academic facilitators
- Practitioners serve as co-educators
- Students conduct field observation, research and applied analysis
Students can choose their Interdisciplinary Immersive Minor from the offered ones:
- Child and Youth Studies
- Practical Philosophy
Learning from this experience feeds directly into the capstone project, integrating immersion with disciplinary inquiry.
In the final year, students synthesise their academic learning and immersion experience through one of two pathways.
Honours Research Track
Students undertake a faculty-supervised dissertation exploring an independent research question.
This pathway prepares students for graduate study and academic research.
Practice-Oriented Pathway
Students pursue applied projects connected to policy, social innovation or sectoral engagement.
Students graduate with both disciplinary expertise and an applied intellectual portfolio.
