    About
    BA (Hons) Sociology

The BA (Hons) Sociology programme at the School of Liberal Studies educates students to analyse social structures, interactions, inequalities and power asymmetries within historical and political contexts. This degree will equip students to inculcate a sociological perspective in understanding and unpacking social problems in society today, but also learn how to make sense of the past as it shapes systemic realities and inequalities in the contemporary context. In a world where social problems are often conceptualised through the frame of common sense, our programme aims to bring a rigorous disciplinary training to our students to systematically study the social issues that affect individuals and communities.

Sociology was introduced 60-years ago in India and much before in the west. Keeping this legacy mind, the BA (Hons) Sociology programme provides core conceptual and theoretical grounding alongside interdisciplinary approaches. It will offer students with the necessary tools and skills in identifying and studying complex social processes and problems, understand issues of social stratification, differences of caste, class, gender, sexuality and age across time periods, and prepare them to learn about theories of social change that can equip them to plan holistic solutions in any sector they may find themselves in the future.

The curriculum is organised around four axes: sociological theory, methodology, sociological themes and specialised electives. The four axes will train students to read reflectively, think critically and write with an understanding that combines theoretical nuance with methodological rigour underlined by a sense of historical continuity. A BA (Hons) Sociology programme at SoLS would equip students to pursue fulfilling careers that demand analytical thinking, an understanding of social problems and the ability to offer policy suggestions.

A journey that pushed me to think beyond boundaries and grow in ways I hadn’t imagined before. Coming from a structured academic background, stepping into an environment that encouraged curiosity, questioning and interdisciplinary learning was both refreshing and transformative.

One of the most valuable aspects of this journey has been the constant encouragement to step beyond comfort zones and embrace new ways of learning. This has helped me grow not only as a student but also as an individual who is more aware, adaptable and ready to take on challenges.

When I joined BMU for Liberal Studies, I was determined to pursue Economics, but the foundation courses in the 1st year opened a new world for me. I studied almost everything and practised everything—from stage plays to directing a film—and in that one year, I realised there were possibilities beyond one major and that I was capable of doing it all. It has pushed me to make an effort at every instance, to learn new things—from thinking deeply to writing, acting and managing teams.
