About
BA (Hons) Psychology
The BA (Hons) Psychology programme at the School of Liberal Studies is designed to develop a rigorous and reflective understanding of the mind, self, behaviour and psychic life in relation to society. At its core, the programme begins with the recognition that psychological life cannot be understood in isolation from the social, cultural and political worlds within which individuals are situated. The major, therefore, invites students to engage with psychology not merely as the study of cognition and behaviour, but as an inquiry into the complex relationship between selfhood, affect, memory, identity, relationships, institutions and collective life.
The programme lays a strong foundation for students to develop a nuanced understanding of psychic processes while also cultivating the intellectual and ethical dispositions central to the discipline: empathetic listening, non-judgmental engagement, reflexive writing and critical inquiry. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own selves and experiences while also learning to listen to others with sensitivity and analytical depth.
The programme also places strong emphasis on research and methodological training, enabling students to work with both quantitative and qualitative methods, including psychological testing, interviews, field-based inquiry and narrative analysis. Through this integrated approach, the Psychology major prepares students not only for advanced study and professional specialisation, but also for meaningful engagement with questions of mental health, education, community life, institutions and social change.
