Five Minutes a Week: How K–12 Teachers Can Use AI to Build Emotionally Grounded Classrooms

Every generation inherits a different set of challenges. Today's children are growing up in a world of unprecedented access to information, constant digital connectivity and increasingly complex emotional experiences. Yet one question deserves more attention: Are we expecting children to navigate complex emotions before helping them understand the basic ones? This isn't an argument against technology or social media. It's an argument for emotional grounding.
The Emotional Development Challenge
Children today are exposed to stories, conversations and situations that previous generations rarely encountered so early in life. News feeds discuss wars, economic uncertainty, climate change, mental health, relationships and social conflicts. Social media exposes them to emotions ranging from outrage and envy to grief and identity struggles. Ironically, many children have had fewer opportunities to build confidence in recognising simple emotions in themselves. I would extend this argument being true to elders too. Can they distinguish frustration from anger? Disappointment from sadness? Excitement from anxiety? Calm from boredom?
Emotional literacy begins with naming and understanding these basic experiences. Without that foundation, more complex emotional situations become harder to interpret and regulate. The challenge is compounded by the trending family dynamics. In many households, both parents work. Families have less shared time. Teachers continue to carry the primary responsibility of curriculum delivery. As a result, intentional conversations about emotions can easily become nobody's explicit responsibility.
What About Cognitive Decline?
Educators across the world increasingly report shorter attention spans, lower reading stamina and greater difficulty sustaining deep concentration. Research supports parts of these observations. While it would be inaccurate to conclude that children are becoming "less intelligent," there is growing evidence that sustained attention and deep cognitive engagement are under pressure in digital environments. Recent research from researchers at the MIT Media Lab has also raised important questions about over-reliance on AI for thinking tasks.
Early findings suggest that when learners outsource too much of the cognitive process to generative AI, they may engage less deeply with the material and retain less understanding compared with learners who actively construct their own ideas. The research is still evolving, but it reinforces an important educational principle: AI should augment thinking, not replace it. The implication is significant. Perhaps the most valuable skills schools now cultivate are not simply remembering information, but maintaining attention, reflecting deeply, making sound judgments and connecting ideas meaningfully.
Why Is This Called the "Anxious Generation"?
The phrase "The Anxious Generation" has become widely recognised because educators, parents and researchers have observed increasing levels of anxiety, loneliness and emotional distress among young people. There is no single cause. Digital childhood, reduced free play, constant comparison on social media, academic expectations, sleep disruption and changing family structures all contribute in different ways.
Many students have less consistent adult support than previous generations. Regardless of where one stands in these debates, one reality is difficult to ignore: many schools are witnessing more students who struggle with emotional regulation, belonging and resilience. This places schools in a unique position, not simply as centres of academic learning, but as communities where children can practice being human.
Teachers Have Already Proven They Are Change Makers
If there was ever doubt about the influence of teachers beyond textbooks, the COVID-19 pandemic answered it. Teachers became mentors, motivators, counsellors, technologists, community connectors and sources of stability during one of the most disruptive periods in modern education. They adapted overnight, learned new technologies, maintained relationships with students across screens and kept learning alive under extraordinary circumstances. That experience demonstrated something profound. Teachers do far more than teach subjects. They shape lives.
In one of my training workshops with more than 150 teachers, I found an agreement on two specific points:
- that we cannot let AI become the child's emotional companion
- emotional development receives the least intentional attention in schools
It is the right time to think of a shift in the teacher's role from primarily delivering content to designing experiences, cultivating relationships and helping students make sense of complex ideas. What If We Asked for Just Five Minutes a Week? This is not a proposal to add another subject to an already crowded timetable. Instead, imagine dedicating just five minutes every week to one simple classroom conversation.
Choose one or two emotions from five basic emotions: {Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Surprise}. Invite students to notice where they encountered that emotion during the week; in a story, an experiment, a historical event, a classroom activity or even in their own learning. The goal is not therapy. The goal is vocabulary, awareness, curiosity and reflection. Over an academic year, those five-minute conversations accumulate into a powerful foundation of emotional literacy.
Where AI Can Help
AI should not become a child's emotional companion. Nor should teachers be expected to become therapists. Instead, AI can multiply a teacher's ability to create emotionally rich classrooms while keeping the teacher firmly at the centre of learning.
Imagine asking AI: "Create a five-minute discussion connecting today's physics lesson with one basic emotion." The response might be surprisingly elegant. A physics teacher introducing orthogonal vectors could ask: "Imagine anger and compassion as two vectors. When anger completely dominates, our actions move in one direction. Compassion introduces another direction. Just as orthogonal vectors combine to create a new resultant vector, our emotional responses are often the result of multiple feelings acting together. How might compassion change the direction of anger?"
The discussion remains rooted in physics while inviting students to think about emotions using the language of vectors. Similarly: A mathematics teacher might explore persistence through challenging problems. A history teacher might discuss fear and courage through historical decisions. A biology teacher could connect adaptation with resilience. A literature teacher could examine how characters move from disappointment to hope.
AI generates the prompts, stories, reflection questions and role-play scenarios in minutes. Teachers guide the conversation, adapt it to their students and connect it naturally to the day's lesson.
The Opportunity Before Us
For generations, schools have excelled at teaching children how to read, calculate and reason. The age of AI presents an opportunity to strengthen another equally important foundation: helping children recognise, name and understand their emotions before asking them to navigate increasingly complex emotional worlds.
Imagine an "emotional progression" similar to a math curriculum:

AI could help teachers generate developmentally appropriate activities for each stage while keeping the teacher firmly in charge of the human interactions.
The key insight is that AI doesn't need to "teach emotions." It can free teachers from the burden of creating materials so they can spend more time facilitating conversations, observation and shared experiences.
Perhaps the future of education is not choosing between academic excellence and emotional development. Perhaps it is recognising that both belong together. And perhaps the first step is remarkably small. Just five thoughtful minutes each week. Those five minutes may become some of the most valuable lessons students carry long after they have forgotten the equations, dates and formulas.
