BMU–CSDS Policy Dialogue Forum Explores New Perspectives on Public Policy and Global Justice

As part of the BMU–CSDS Policy Dialogue Forum, Elise Klein delivered a thought-provoking session on reimagining public policy through the lens of the Global South. She traced the historical roots of mainstream public policy to Euro-American institutions shaped by Cold War priorities and modernisation theory, arguing that many conventional frameworks continue to overlook their links to colonialism, inequality, and global power structures. Drawing on examples from development interventions and behavioural economics, she highlighted how policy approaches often individualise social problems while sidelining structural inequities and longstanding governance traditions from Indigenous, African, Asian, and other non-Western societies.

Responding to the discussion, Prathama Banerjee expanded the conversation to questions of reparations, redistribution, alternative sovereignties, and transnational solidarities. The session created a rich space for dialogue on governance, justice, and the need for policy frameworks that acknowledge diverse histories, experiences, and knowledge systems. By encouraging participants to engage with multiple perspectives and interconnected global challenges, the forum opened meaningful conversations on more equitable and globally relevant approaches to public policy.
