What is Civil Engineering? Is it a Good Degree?

by BML Munjal University September 20, 2022

Civil engineering is said to be the oldest engineering course in the world. It deals with building the environment. You can imagine it started when someone constructed a roof over their head or laid stones to raise the level of water in a container. Let us discuss what Civil Engineering is in detail.

    What is civil engineering?

Civil engineering is the engineering branch that deals with the professional practice of designing, making, and developing infrastructure and related projects. This can be done on a small scale like the development of pavements, roads, and buildings, or a bigger scale, such as nationwide water networks, transport systems, etc.

Civil engineers are involved in every aspect to build a structure. They are included in planning, designing, budgeting, surveying, constructing, managing, and analyzing the construction of buildings and structures.

Basically, our civilization has been engineering by civil engineering. It has built spaces, buildings, roads, bridges, railways, airports, subway systems, metro rail, and many other conspicuous creations.

These are the giant structures that civil engineers have engineered. We use everyday things in our mundane lives, such as the kitchen drawer or the water shower; everything has been made with some part of civil engineering.

    What after Civil Engineering?

Becoming a Civil Engineer seems exciting because you get to see your work results at the end of the day in this profession. Whether it is a high-rise building, a railway track, a road, a hydroelectric dam, or a robust bridge, you can see everything you build in the end.

Now that we have discussed civil engineering and what after it, let us discuss things for which Civil Engineers are well known and lauded. Several civil engineering companies are tasked with making plans, developing drawings, and planning construction materials for various structures.

They need to construct a building so that it adheres to the local standard codes, abides by the government’s rules and regulations, and is safe. Efficiency and efficacy need to be thought about because you also need to ensure that the construction lasts many years.

After finishing their engineering, the Civil Engineers can be found in the following areas:

    • Transportation Industry

You will be entrusted with building and designing roads, freeway interchanges, ports, buildings, railways, and bridges. In addition, you will need to build transportation structures that ensure a high user rate, good interface, smooth traffic flow, and future expansions.

    • Aerospace Industry

You will be involved in designing space stations, spaceships, shuttles, aircraft, and jetliners. You will have to study interdisciplinary content to ensure they adhere to the physics and dynamics of the environment they are built for.

    • Automotive Industry

You will be manufacturing parts, perfecting the load-bearing capacity of the chassis, improving the crash index of doors, etc. You need to adhere to the guidelines and specifications required by your client because the parts you manufacture should fit into their vehicle.

    • Construction Industry

You will be involved in building and designing homes, offices, parks, studios, high-rise buildings, temples, power plants, mosques, churches, and other structures. You can also join government jobs where you will have to go for land surveys.

    • Water Management Industry

You will construct wastewater and freshwater systems. You need to ensure that the designs you construct are safe, protected, and meet all the mandatory regulations. Therefore, you need to build seawalls, levees, sewage plants, flood protection systems, and dams, among others.

Let us now list down various job avenues you will have after completing your civil engineering course.

You can work in the following roles:
    • Construction Manager
    • Geotechnical Engineer
    • Environmental Engineer
    • Public Health Engineer
    • Transportation engineer
    • Urban planning engineer
    • Mining Engineer
    • Highway Engineer

Some of the public sector companies that recruit civil engineers are as follows:
    • Indian Oil Corporation (IOC)
    • Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)
    • Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)
    • Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC)
    • Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL)
    • Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)
    • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
    • National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC)
    • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)

They are many private companies and MNCs like The Birla Group, the Hero Group, L&T Engineering & Construction, Tata Projects Ltd, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), etc.

Therefore, you need not think about what after civil engineering? Because due to ever-going projects in the construction industry, you will always have so many construction projects going on in the market. Civil engineers are always high in demand.
